'It’s not just my street—half of Shefford must have experienced it,' she added, pointing out that the tankers are stationed on the main road, forcing passersby to endure the pungent odor and the sight of open sewers being pumped into the trucks. 'You literally have to cover your nose to walk past,' she said.
Anglian Water, the utility company responsible, has acknowledged the inconvenience. A spokesperson apologized for the disruption, stating, 'We understand the tankers are large and noisy, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience they’re causing.' They explained that the tankers are essential to keep the sewer system functioning while repairs are underway, diverting wastewater to a nearby treatment plant. Nita’s husband, Tony Brown, a Conservative member of the Central Bedfordshire Council for Shefford, expressed his frustration after contacting Anglian Water four weeks ago. He was informed that a pipe had collapsed but was given no estimate for how long the repairs would take. 'They’ve known about this for weeks and should have had a plan by now,' he said. 'It’s unacceptable.'
Anglian Water insists the tankers will remain in place, pumping wastewater to protect homes and the environment, until the system is fully operational again.
