Renegade Zoo: Empowering Neurodivergent Musicians Through Alt-Pop Rock | BBC News NI (2026)

Renegade Zoo, an alt-pop rock band, is making waves with their unique sound and commitment to inclusivity. The band, formed through a creative arts project for young adults with learning disabilities in Londonderry, has captured the hearts of many with their debut album, 'Eyes on the Road'.

What makes Renegade Zoo truly special is their diverse and neurodivergent lineup. Rapper Donna Marie Duddy, known as DM, joins singer and percussionist Sarah Jane Murray (SJ), and singer Sorcha Friel. Together, they create a sound that defies typical pop conventions, blending rock, pop, alt-country, and hip-hop influences. Their lyrics range from meaningful messages to lighthearted, silly themes, reflecting their eclectic approach to songwriting.

The band's journey began with the Tuned In Project, where music teacher Philip 'Wally' Wallace recognized the potential in the group. Through regular meetings, they discovered their collective talent and formed a band. This decision has been transformative for the young musicians, boosting their confidence and self-esteem. As SJ puts it, 'There's times that I might sing a wrong note or it might be a bit dodgy here and there and I just know for a fact that it is just a process, that it is alright.'

The album launch at Derry's New Gate Arts and Culture Centre was a highlight for the band, with SJ describing the dancing and singing crowd as a testament to their creativity. The band's performance at the Stendhal Festival further solidified their place in the music scene, with Sorcha Friel enjoying the thrill of larger crowds.

Looking ahead, the band members have different aspirations. DM dreams of a UK tour, while SJ envisions a Northern Ireland tour as a more immediate goal. Sorcha's simpler hope is for more new songs and the freedom to be themselves. As they continue to write and perform, Renegade Zoo is poised to leave an indelible mark on the music industry, proving that inclusivity and creativity go hand in hand.
