President Mahama's focus on national development is a stark contrast to the ongoing EC petition saga, according to Akwatia MP Bernard Bediako Baidoo. Baidoo emphasizes the importance of humility and accountability among public officials, reminding them that no office in Ghana's governance system is immune to scrutiny.
In an interview with Isaac Addae on The Verdict, Baidoo highlighted the constitutional checks on even the President, including the possibility of impeachment. He stressed that leaders must act responsibly and be mindful of the potential consequences of their actions.
"When you're given an office to serve the people, you must understand that you're not absolute," Baidoo said. "Even the President can be impeached, and your actions can be scrutinized by the entire nation. So, let's exercise caution."
His comments come in the wake of a petition seeking the removal of the Electoral Commission's (EC) leadership and composition due to alleged incompetence and cronyism. Baidoo clarified that the President does not personally intervene in EC matters, as petitions are typically referred to the Chief Justice for constitutional handling.
"The President won't even look at it," Baidoo stated. "He will forward it to the Chief Justice, who has more important matters to address. The President is focused on fixing the economy and improving the lives of ordinary Ghanaians, not on the EC's composition. If someone brings a petition, he says, 'Give it to the Chief Justice.' That's the President's approach."
Baidoo urged leaders across the government to prioritize service delivery over personal interests, emphasizing that public office is ultimately about serving the people, not consolidating power.
