Mounjaro's Health Benefits: A Reversal Story
A recent study has uncovered a surprising twist in the journey of individuals using Mounjaro, a weight-loss drug. After discontinuing the medication, participants experienced a significant weight regain, along with the reversal of other health benefits they had achieved. This finding highlights the complex nature of obesity treatment and the need for sustained medical support.
The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed the SURMOUNT-4 trial, which involved 308 participants who received tirzepatide treatment for 36 weeks. After this period, half of the participants continued the treatment, while the other half switched to a placebo for an additional 52 weeks. The results were eye-opening.
During the initial 36 weeks, participants' weight decreased, and their cardiometabolic parameters improved. However, the real story unfolded after the medication was discontinued. Within a year, 82% of participants regained at least 25% of their initial weight loss, with varying degrees of health benefit reversals.
The more weight participants regained, the more their health benefits seemed to diminish. Those who regained 50% to 75% of their lost weight experienced a 10.1cm increase in waist circumference, a 9.6mmHg rise in systolic blood pressure, an 8.4% increase in non-HDL cholesterol, a 0.27% increase in HbA1c, and a 46.2% increase in fasting insulin.
The study's authors emphasized the importance of continued obesity treatment, stating that the findings 'underscore the importance of continued obesity treatment.' They also noted that the weight regain was associated with a greater reversal of initial cardiometabolic parameter improvements.
A spokesperson for Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro, responded to the study, acknowledging the need for long-term treatment for obesity. They highlighted that lifestyle changes alone may not be sufficient for everyone and that medical support, combined with tailored lifestyle modifications, is often necessary for successful weight management.
