Bold truth: a major Hallmark return is reigniting a long-standing controversy around forgiveness, reputation, and creative reinvention in television. Lori Loughlin is poised to rejoin the Hallmark Channel, returning to the When Calls the Heart universe for its 14th season. This marks a notable shift since her 2019 departure, which followed her arrest in connection with a nationwide college admissions bribery scandal.
As an original cast member, Loughlin will reprise her beloved Abigail Stanton and is set to appear in six of the twelve episodes planned for the upcoming installments, a development officially announced on Tuesday. Production for season 14 is scheduled to take place next year in the Vancouver area, with a 2027 premiere window in mind. The cast also includes series regulars Erin Krakow, Kevin McGarry, Jack Wagner, Chris McNally, Pascale Hutton, and Kavan Smith, all returning to bring the frontier town of Hope Valley to life.
The storyline follows Elizabeth Thornton, a schoolteacher portrayed by Krakow, who leaves the city’s comforts to forge a new existence in the frontier town. There, she gradually discovers that Hope Valley is more than just a setting—it becomes her true home as she grows within the community.
Hallmark Media’s leadership emphasizes audience attachment to Abigail Stanton. In a statement, Michelle Vicary highlighted that the character has long resonated with fans since the series began in 2014, and bringing back the actor who originally defined Abigail helps continue that beloved arc for Hearties.
This decision arrives after Hallmark Channel severed ties with Loughlin nearly seven years ago, in the wake of the college admissions scandal involving her and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli. The consequences included a period of legal proceedings and a two-month prison sentence for Loughlin following her conviction related to the broader scheme of admission bribes to top universities.
When Calls the Heart is produced as a Canadian-led project, in collaboration with Brad Krevoy Television and Believe Pictures, continuing to build on its cross-border appeal.
