A terrifying scenario for many smartphone owners is the fear of an alarm failing to wake them up after a long night's sleep. And it seems Apple has added a new layer of anxiety to this common worry, with users reporting their iPhone alarms going off silently.
Brett Chody, a frustrated iPhone user, shared her experience of missing an early flight due to this very issue. In a TikTok video that went viral, she warned others about the silent alarm phenomenon, only to discover just how widespread the problem is.
"I want to make everyone aware of this issue," Chody explained in her video, which has over 2 million views. "I missed my flight to Chicago this morning because I set an alarm on my iPhone, but it went off silently. I woke up at 6:30 am on my own, only to realize my flight had already departed. My phone's alarm had been going off for two hours, but it was completely silent."
Chody's video sparked a wave of comments from other users who had experienced similar situations. "I thought I was going crazy!" one commenter wrote. Another shared, "My phone does this too, it's so frustrating!"
The cause of this frustrating problem appears to be the Attention Aware Features in Face ID settings, which automatically lowers the phone's volume when the user is looking at the screen. This feature, according to an Apple discussion thread, is the culprit behind the silent alarms.
"I believe the feature turns the alarm to silent as soon as my phone recognizes my face," wrote one Apple user in the thread. "Turning off this feature fixed the issue for me."
But here's where it gets controversial: Apple's decision to make the first-generation iPhone SE obsolete has also sparked outrage among users. According to MacRumors, this budget-friendly smartphone, released in 2016, will no longer be eligible for repairs or service by Apple or third-party vendors.
The device was discontinued in 2018, and per Apple's policy, gadgets that haven't been distributed for sale within the last seven years are considered obsolete. This means that many iPhone SE users will need to consider their upgrade options, as their devices will no longer receive official support.
So, what do you think? Are these issues with iPhone alarms and device obsolescence a cause for concern? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
