Fashion writer Danya Issawi from The Cut argued that the costumes and hairstyles were not authentic to the era. Ryan Murphy, the series creator, quickly clarified that these were merely test images for lighting and color, not the final look.
"That is not the wig we're using," Murphy explained. "It was a work in progress, but releasing these images helped create some space for our actors."
And this is the part most people miss: the team used this feedback to make significant changes. They replaced their costume designer and even decided to dye Pidgeon's hair instead of using a wig, ensuring an accurate portrayal.
Hines noted, "The negative feedback allowed us to course-correct and make necessary adjustments."
