The Ultimate iPhone Clone? Honor's Magic 8 Pro Air: A Controversial Copycat?
In the world of smartphone design, inspiration can sometimes blur into imitation. Honor, an Android OEM, has taken this to a whole new level with its latest flagship, the Magic 8 Pro Air. But here's where it gets controversial: while it may look like an iPhone Air knock-off, it fails to capture the essence of what makes the iPhone Air unique.
The Magic 8 Pro Air is an unabashed clone, borrowing heavily from Apple's design language. At first glance, it's a blend of multiple iPhone models, with a hint of Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge thrown in. From the slim build and pill-shaped camera module to the large circular casing, it's hard to deny the iPhone-inspired aesthetics. And this is the part most people miss: Honor's attempt to create its own identity falls short, leaving us with a device that lacks a distinct personality.
However, Honor has made some subtle distinctions. The additional sensors, including a periscope telephoto lens and an ultra-wide camera, add a unique touch. But even these seem to draw inspiration from Google's Pixel design. The larger battery capacity is a welcome addition, but it comes at the cost of a slightly bulkier chassis, missing the mark on the iPhone Air's sleek profile.
The orange colorway, a popular choice at CES, is an obvious nod to the iPhone 17 Pro. Yet, Honor's execution lacks the boldness to make it truly stand out. The flat, matte sides resemble the iPhone 17 series, further blurring the lines between inspiration and imitation.
Despite the design controversies, the Magic 8 Pro Air boasts impressive specs. A bright AMOLED display, a powerful main sensor, and rapid charging capabilities make it a compelling package. But the question remains: can a device truly excel when it struggles to find its own design identity?
