Have you ever felt that irresistible pull to wander down a street, drawn in by its unique energy and the promise of hidden gems? Well, someone's been paying attention! The world's "coolest streets" have officially been named, but beyond the hype, what do the people who actually live there really think?
Time Out, the global city guide, believes that the true heart of a city beats strongest in its streets. They see streets as the place where "local life [is] at its most authentic." That's the driving force behind their annual "Coolest Streets in the World" list – a curated selection of walkways, alleys, and urban thoroughfares that capture the essence of a city's spirit.
The 2025 edition, according to Time Out travel editor Grace Beard, celebrates how "streets are everything that makes urban life brilliant." But how do you even begin to quantify "coolness"? To create the list, Time Out relies on its extensive network of editors and writers around the globe. Each advocate fiercely for the special places in their own cities that deserve recognition.
And this year, the coveted top spot belongs to Rua do Senado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! Time Out describes this downtown strip as a vibrant hub, teeming with new and exciting establishments that infuse the area with "a fresh energy," all while honoring its established institutions like Armazém Senado, known for its lively weekly samba jam sessions that spill onto the street. It is a place where the old meets the new, where tradition and innovation intertwine.
Luiz Felipe Bernardo, who curates the popular Instagram guide RIO DESTAQUE, expressed to CNN Travel that seeing a Rio street on the list is a "tremendous source of pride" for locals. He argues that Rua do Senado perfectly encapsulates the city's "history, diversity, and a cultural movement that never stops." For him, it’s a place where "music, gastronomy, art, and an unmatched energy all come together." It's more than just a street; it's a microcosm of everything that makes Rio special.
But here's where it gets controversial... What exactly makes a street "cool"? Is it the trendy boutiques? The Instagrammable cafes? Or is there something deeper at play?
Fanghua Street in Chengdu, China, landed at number 4 on Time Out's list, lauded as the "city’s go-to strip for people-watching." Time Out editor Beard acknowledges that "coolness" is definitely subjective. However, she emphasizes that the streets on the list share key characteristics: they're "packed with independent businesses, great places to eat and fun things to do." It's about the overall experience, the feeling you get when you're there.
Interestingly, there's no single architectural style that defines a "cool" street. Whether it's "a pedestrianized canalside path or a major artery," the physical form is less important than the vibe.
Consider Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California, which secured the number 25 spot. Now, most people wouldn't immediately classify the PCH as a traditional "street." It's a legendary West Coast road trip destination! And this is the part most people miss... Time Out argues that if you actually stop and explore, you'll discover a wealth of experiences. "It’s teeming with cool stuff to do, eat and drink," says Beard, highlighting the road’s strong "community spirit" in the wake of the devastating Palisades wildfires. Time Out stresses that a street's sense of camaraderie and creativity are just as important as its bars and coffee shops. It's about the people, the connections, and the shared experiences that make a place truly memorable.
So, where else made the cut? Rua do Bonjardim, in the heart of Porto, Portugal, claimed the number 3 position. It was celebrated for its old-school grocers, unique accommodations, and innovative dining options. Bruno Amaral, owner of the artsy Ottto restaurant on Rua do Bonjardim, told CNN Travel that he was "really excited" to see the street recognized and hopes it will encourage "more and more people to discover its charm."
Orange Street in Osaka, Japan, took the number 2 spot, transforming from a former antique district into a vibrant mix of streetwear boutiques, retro shops, outdoor eateries, and extravagant cocktail bars.
Sherbrooke Street West in Montreal, Canada, earned the highest ranking for a North American street, rounding out the top five. Its appeal lies in its historic architecture, museums, and the intellectual atmosphere emanating from McGill University and its renowned Blue Metropolis literary festival. Katherine Davidson, a former McGill student, told CNN that the street is "a stone’s throw from much of what makes Montreal great," including terrace-lined cafes and the Musée des beaux-arts.
Orchard Street in New York City's Lower East Side came in at number 8, praised for its diverse array of shops and businesses, including the newly opened bookstore/podcast studio P&T Knitwear. Owner Bradley Tusk, named the store in honor of his grandfather's 1950s business, told CNN Travel that it's an "honour" to be acknowledged as "cool" by Time Out. He added, "When my grandfather started the original P&T Knitwear on the Lower East Side in 1952, I doubt he even knew what cool meant, let alone that his grandson would open a bookstore and podcast studio a block over on a street considered one of the coolest in the world." What a great story!
But, is this list really for tourists, or is it for the locals?
Time Out maintains that its ranking is intended to inspire both visitors and residents alike. The streets are "certified local favourites," according to Time Out editor Beard. She suggests that the list might even introduce some locals to hidden gems within their own city. For tourists, the list offers "invaluable in-the-know insight to help them plan their next city break – and spend their time and money on local businesses." The hope is to encourage mindful travel that supports the local economy and celebrates the unique character of each place.
