Brendan Moodie, a seasoned park ranger with 35 years of experience, recently took the helm at Tasmania's iconic Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. He's sounding the alarm for hikers, urging them to respect the mountain's volatile nature. Each day, approximately 40 adventurers embark on the legendary Overland Track, a challenging six-day alpine hike.
But here's where it gets controversial: the weather. Mr. Moodie emphasizes the rapid shifts in conditions, recalling instances where the temperature has swung by 22 degrees Celsius in a mere 20 minutes! This dramatic changeability often catches hikers off guard, making preparation paramount.
Tragically, the park has witnessed devastating incidents. In September, a Chinese tourist lost her life when her group was overwhelmed by the harsh conditions. Just a month later, in October, a woman suffered hypothermia on her very first night of a planned six-day trek. These incidents serve as stark reminders of the mountain's unforgiving environment.
Mr. Moodie stresses the importance of thorough research before venturing into the park. He advises hikers to be prepared for both scorching heat and freezing snow, and to be ready to adjust their plans, perhaps opting for a shorter walk or postponing their adventure altogether if the weather forecast is unfavorable.
Following any incident, accident, or fatality, Parks undertakes a comprehensive review, and recent incidents are still under investigation by the coroner. The park provides information in both English and Mandarin, clearly outlining the risks and the ever-changing weather patterns. Mr. Moodie recommends that those tackling the Overland Track carry all the necessary gear for an overnight stay, just in case they can't reach one of the huts along the way.
During summer, when up to 3,000 visitors flock to the park daily, it's crucial to take extra precautions. Mr. Moodie suggests choosing shaded trails, wearing appropriate clothing and hats, and bringing ample water and sunscreen. He also emphasizes the importance of informing someone of your hiking plans, including your route and expected return time, so they can raise the alarm if necessary.
