BCB's Integrity Unit Clarifies Routine Operations Amidst BPL-12
The Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) Integrity Unit has addressed recent concerns regarding its operations during the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL-12). The unit, led by independent chairman Alex Marshall, has been conducting routine integrity checks in response to credible suspicions, adhering to the ICC's global integrity framework.
Two franchises, Dhaka Capitals and Noakhali Express, have voiced their discontent with the Integrity Unit's (IU) stringent investigations. Dhaka Capitals CEO Atik Fahad publicly expressed frustration over the IU's activities, threatening to withdraw from future BPL tournaments. Fahad also revealed an incident where IU officials entered the hotel room of Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz without prior notice, causing confusion and prompting Gurbaz to consider a potential boycott if such practices persist.
Noakhali Express shared similar grievances, including protests against IU members following harassment incidents in the dressing room.
BCB's statement clarifies that these integrity operations are standard procedures under the ICC's anti-corruption code. It emphasizes that the IU's actions are in line with the organization's zero-tolerance policy towards corrupt cricketing activities. The unit's preventive measures have significantly reduced suspicious activity alerts by approximately 80%.
As part of these integrity checks, foreign players have been privately interviewed as witnesses to verify recruitment, contractual, and payment processes. BCB assures that these meetings are confidential and do not imply any player's involvement in an investigation or guilt.
BCB reiterates its commitment to maintaining the Bangladesh Premier League's credibility, transparency, and reputation, despite the controversy surrounding the Integrity Unit's operations.
